Pituitary Cachexia Treated with Corticotrophic Hormone
نویسنده
چکیده
Extreme emaciation accompanied by a melancholic psychosis is sometimes seen in women at or, more frequently, after the menopause. A number of such cases have been investigated and treated at the Bristol Mental Hospital, so that it is possible to describe this form of Involutional Melancholia as a clinical entity (Hemphill and Reiss, 1940 and 1942). Physically there is gross emaciation with loss of muscle strength ; the skin is inelastic and ver}r dry, having a dessicated appearance and texture; there is a complete absence of sweating ; the breasts and external genitalia are atrophied, axillary and pubic hair falls out while hair of the head and eyebrows is brittle and lustreless; the thyroid is usually small and menses have ceased. PROP1 overexpression in corticotrophinomas: evidence for the role of PROP1 in the maintenance of cells committed to corticotrophic differentiation
OBJECTIVE The expression of transcription factors involved in early pituitary development, such as PROP1 and POU1F1, has been detected in pituitary adenoma tissues. In this study, we sought to characterize the transcriptional profiles of PROP1, POU1F1, and TBX19 in functioning and nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas in an attempt to identify their roles in tumorigenesis and hormone hypersecretion...
متن کاملDifferential effects of the early and late intrauterine environment on corticotrophic cell development.
The developing embryo and fetus respond to a range of intrauterine stressors, but the effect of chronic intrauterine stress on the programmed development of pituitary corticotrophs has not been investigated. We have used a pregnant sheep model in which the embryonic environment at conception has been surgically perturbed by uterine carunclectomy. This procedure results in the development of fet...
متن کاملPituitary deficiency following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence and severity of pituitary insufficiency after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. METHODS Pituitary function was tested in a series of patients more than 12 months but less than 60 months after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage using a combined TRH-LHRH-arginine test and the insulin tolerance test, to elucidate possible deficits in the gonadotrophic, ...
متن کاملInterleukin-2 and interleukin-2 receptor expression in human corticotrophic adenoma and murine pituitary cell cultures.
The production of IL-1 and IL-6 by pituitary cells has recently been demonstrated. In this study we investigated the expression of IL-2 and its receptor (IL-2R) by pituitary cells of different species. In Northern blots, a single hybridizing band of 1 kb, identical to that in normal stimulated lymphocytes, was obtained with specific IL-2 probes. In the mouse AT-20 pituitary tumor cell line, IL-...
متن کاملCushing Disease After Treatment of Nonfunctional Pituitary Adenoma
We describe a very rare case of nonfunctional pituitary adenoma (NFPA) that exhibited corticotrophic activity after resection and radiotherapy. The possible mechanisms of the transformation from NFPA to Cushing disease (CD) are discussed.A 43-year-old man presented with impaired vision, bilateral frontal headaches, and hyposexuality. He had no symptoms suggestive of hypercortisolism, and 8 am p...
